Walks in Cairns / Townsville Qld area

We are off to Cairns in June and are intending spending the best part of a
month walking in the area as far south as Townsville and would appreciate
any feedback as to any walks particularly overnight walks that anyone may

There are a lot of good walks in the tablelands area, particularly
now the weather is not so hot. I like very much the Herberton area,
(old mining town) i live there :).

Do a search on http://www.google.com.au/ using 'tablelands walk' as
your search term.

I can particularly recommend http://users.qldnet.com.au/~tablelandwalk/
though you need to be a member for overnight walks.

Grab a book called "Tropical Walking Tracks - Atherton Tableland". There
are maybe 4 books in the series. The only other one I have is "Cairns
and Kuranda". They have what seem to be some good walks, though I
haven't had a chance to try many of them.

They might be in bookstores in Cairns. I picked my copies up from a
corner store at Lake Placid (just below hydro station).

I've been meaning to respond to this for several days, I'm glad someone
else has already pointed you towards these books, the series covers
from Cardwell through to the Daintree, they are well written, although
(possibly in reflection of the undoubted fitness of the authors) I find
that the times stated to complete various walks/Sections vary from
60-75% of the real time it takes me to complete the same walks.

Some other sources for you are the QLD Parks and Wildlife web pages,
search for "misty mountains".


In regards to Townsville, look for walks on Magnetic Is and Mount Spec.

Hi Rod,
June is our winter here on the Atherton Tablelands, and as long as the
weather is not wet we have some wonderful day and overnight walks on offer.

based on the Tablelands - we are members.
Also the Misty mountains as Kevin has already stated is a great new walking
area for southern visitors http://www.mistymountains.com.au/ where you can
spend a few days exploring incredible water falls and rainforests.
Hinchinbrook Island http://www.john.chapman.name/qld-hinc.html is a beaut
walk of approx 5 days, Mount Bartle Frere, Qlds highest mountain is also a
great overnight walk if you have the gear to endure a cold night at that
time of the year.

which shows many different walks of all different grades and lengths,click
on "walks" to find walks in different areas, although most there are day
hikes.
Enjoy our FNQ - it has a lot more to offer than most southerners think.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I will follow up on the leads suggested that
I have not already found. Another thought that I have has since my original
post is what is the quality of the stream water especially in the Misty
mountain area ?
Of late we have mostly done our walking on the South Island of New Zealand
and have found it to drinkable without any problems but naturally are wary
of the water quality in a new area.
